Lessly O’Leary

Flutist- Educator
Lessly earned her Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from Western Michigan University, where she served as a graduate assistant under the guidance of Martha Councell-Vargas. She also holds bachelor’s degrees in Flute Performance from Universidad Hemisferios in Ecuador, where she studied with Gustavo Lovato, complemented by private studies with Luciano Carrera.
 
A distinguished orchestral musician, Lessly served as Principal Flute of the University Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Graduate Woodwind Quintet at Western Michigan University. Her leadership in the section extended to the Youth Orchestra of Ecuador, the Bolívar Theater Orchestra, and the Hemisferios University Orchestra. Additionally, she performed as a member of the Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra in Omaha, Nebraska.
 
In 2022, Lessly was awarded the Graduate Student Travel Grant from Western Michigan University. This grant allowed her to present an international masterclass on the qualities of sound, support, and musicality for intermediate-level flutists at the International Flute Festival in Quito, Ecuador. Throughout her career, she has performed on prominent global stages as both a soloist and orchestral member, appearing in Ecuador, Argentina, Mexico, the United States, Spain, Switzerland, and France.
 
Her pedagogical expertise was central to several distinguished institutions, including FOSJE, Amazonart, the Youth Orchestra of Ecuador, Sinfonía por la Vida, and Faces. She also contributed to a cross-cultural musical project with AIESEC in Tucumán, Argentina. During her tenure as Lead Flute Instructor at Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra – Kalamazoo Kids in Tune, she fostered the talent and enthusiasm of her students through the exploration of world music. Additionally, she is part of the faculty at Marshall Music Company.
 
Lessly’s influence extends into arts administration and coordination. She has held leadership roles with the Youth Orchestra of Ecuador and FACES, and served as President of the Flute Orchestra of Ecuador. For several years, she was the coordinator for the International Flute Festival in the Center of the World in Quito.
 
Her dedication to musical excellence is reflected in her active participation in the global flute community. She has been a guest artist and attendee at the International Flute Festival in the Center of the World (2010–2022), the FluteXpansions Sonic Immersion (2022), and the Great Lakes Flute Festival (2023, 2024), where she showcased the works of Ecuadorian composers. She also served as an intern for the National Flute Association (NFA) convention in Chicago.
 
She has refined her artistry through masterclasses with an esteemed international faculty, including Pierre-Yves Artaud, Matthias Ziegler, Camilla Hoitenga, Eric Lamb, Shanna Pranaitis, Angeleita Floyd, Sibel Pensel, Sheryl Cohen, Magda Schwerzmann, Celso Woltzenlogel, Felipe García, and Viviana Guzman.
 
Currently, Lessly is a member of a collective of nine Latin American female flutists representing Ecuador, dedicated to creating the world’s largest catalog of flute works by Latin American composers. As the flutist of Dúo Raíces, she toured Michigan and the United States, presenting Latin American repertoire to captivated audiences.
 
In 2025, she attended the PLAYUSA convening at Carnegie Hall in New York City, proudly representing Kalamazoo Kids in Tune as a dynamic Teaching Artist. That same year, she was honored as a guest artist at the First International Flute Convention in Xalapa, Mexico, where she delivered lectures, premiered Ecuadorian compositions, and served as a juror for the prestigious international flute ensemble competition.
 
As a soloist, Lessly is currently dedicated to exploring the transformative power of sound through the lens of musical wellness. Her recent work focuses on the flute as a medium for healing and mindfulness, delving into a specialized solo repertoire that emphasizes resonance, intentionality, and the deep connection between performer and listener. By creating a synergy between virtuosic performance and acoustic well-being, she transmits a spectrum of emotions, inviting her audience to experience sound as a physical sensation. Her performances are designed to elevate the listener’s emotional state, leaving them with a profound sense of clarity and a newly awakened sense of creativity.
